Call for Proposals:
AM22 Pre- and Post-conference Workshops

The AAEA Executive Board invites proposals for Pre- and Post-conference Workshops at the 2022 AAEA Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA. The deadline for proposals is Thursday, December 2. Selections will be finalized at the AAEA Executive Board meeting in early January and organizers will be notified soon thereafter by the AAEA President.

AAEA welcomes proposals for Invited Paper sessions for the 2022 AAEA Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA. Papers in these Invited Paper sessions may be published in the Applied Economics Perspectives and Policy (AEPP) in March 2023, subject to review. Proposals from individuals or groups need to be submitted using the online submission system by Thursday, December 2, 2021. The system will open in early November.

Call for Abstracts
AM22 Selected Presentation Papers and Posters

AAEA seeks submissions for Selected Presentations for the 2022 AAEA Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA. Selected Presentations are a submission category that represents both Selected Papers and Selected Posters. All submissions are reviewed and accepted together, and only after acceptance are the submissions designated as a paper or poster. At the time of submission, individuals will have the option for their submission to be considered as a poster only. There is no paper only option. Abstracts must be received by Wednesday, January 18, 2022 11:59 PM CST, and should be submitted using AAEA’s online Abstract Management System. The system will open in early November.

The AAEA Executive Board invites Track Session proposals for the 2022 AAEA Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA. Initial proposals need to be submitted by Thursday, December 2, 2021, to Samantha Bilgrien at sbilgrien@aaea.org. Final, detailed submissions associated with each session are due by March 16, 2022. The AAEA Business Office will work with each Section that submits proposals on their final submission.

AAEA Mentoring Award

Deliberate, purposive, mentoring takes time and effort. Through the process of collaborating with a mentee, a mentor shows a mentee the ‘ropes’ of the profession, helps to identify and cultivate the mentee’s strengths, and opens up networks and professional opportunities. To mentor is to commit time and effort. The benefits of mentoring—colleagues from diverse backgrounds staying in the profession and fully expressing their potential—are enjoyed by the entire profession. Nominations are due on February 9, 2022.

Bruce Gardner Memorial Prize for Applied Policy Analysis Award

The Bruce Gardner Memorial Prize for Applied Policy Analysis Award recognizes outstanding impact on agricultural, food, environmental, development and other related policy, based on sound foundations in economic theory, in the tradition of Bruce Gardner. Policy issues are interpreted in their broadest sense. They may relate to either a national or international situation. The purpose of the award is to encourage sound economic analysis of a broad set of public policy issues that provides timely and relevant information for more effective public policy and program discussions. The award is intended to focus attention on important efforts in research, education or public service, which facilitate the policy process and improve public performance and understanding. A maximum of one award is given annually. The award will carry a cash prize of $1,500 and plaque of recognition financed by the Bruce Gardner Memorial Special Purpose Fund of the AAEA Trust. The Bruce Gardner Memorial Prize for Applied Policy Analysis Award Subcommittee is encouraged to generate nominations to assure that all outstanding policy contributions are considered. Nominations are due on February 9, 2022.

Distinguished Extension/Outreach Program Awards

The Distinguished Extension/Outreach Program Awards recognize achievement of excellence in extension economics education programs. Awards may recognize not only individual programs, but also significant contributions of an individual economist to a larger, group program. We encourage submissions from women, underrepresented minorities and members from a broad set of academic, government, industry and NGO organizations. Nominations are due on February 9, 2022.

Distinguished Teaching Awards

The Distinguished Teaching Awards recognize and encourage meritorious performance in undergraduate and graduate teaching in agricultural or applied economics as defined by the AAEA vision statement. These award winners will demonstrate outstanding ability and strong performance in fulfilling the teaching mission of agricultural or applied economics as defined by the AAEA Vision Statement. We encourage submissions from women, underrepresented minorities and members from a broad set of academic, government, industry and NGO organizations. Nominations are due on February 9, 2022.

Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award

The Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award is given in recognition of development of professional excellence by persons writing doctoral dissertations in any field consistent with the AAEA vision statement. A maximum of three awards are given each year, and a $1000 cash prize accompanies each award. Nominations are due on February 9, 2022.

Outstanding Master's Thesis Awards

The Outstanding Master's Thesis Award is given in recognition of development of professional excellence by individuals writing master's theses in any field consistent with the AAEA mission statement. A maximum of three awards are given. A cash supplement of $500 accompanies each award. Nominations are due on February 9, 2022.

Publication of Enduring Quality Award

The Publication of Enduring Quality Award is granted to encourage excellence in publications in fields consistent with the AAEA Vision Statement. A maximum of one award is given each year for a publication with publication date falling at least ten years prior to the year of recognition (2010 or before). Entries are judged on the basis of their enduring quality as evidenced by impact to the discipline (eg citations, subsequent contributions). Competition is focused on one specific publication by the author(s), one of whom was a member of the Association at the time of publication, and not on the cumulative work of the author(s). Nominations are due on February 9, 2022.

Quality of Communication Award

The Quality of Communication Award is granted to encourage excellence in publications in fields consistent with the AAEA vision statement. A maximum of two awards are given each year. Entries must demonstrate superior communication of concepts or knowledge in any subject matter of professional specialization (i.e., teaching, research, policy analysis or extension) in agricultural and applied economics as defined by the vision statement.  We encourage submissions from women, underrepresented minorities and members from a broad set of academic, government, industry and NGO organizations. Nominations are due on February 9, 2022.

Quality of Research Discovery Award

The Quality of Research Discovery Award is granted to encourage excellent publications in fields consistent with the AAEA Vision Statement. A maximum of two awards are given each year. Entries must demonstrate excellence and creativity in research methodology and/or expand the frontiers of applied economics. We encourage submissions from women, underrepresented minorities and members from a broad set of academic, government, industry and NGO organizations. Nominations are due on February 9, 2022.

AEPP publishes research related to agriculture; animal, plant, and human health; energy; environment; food and consumer behavior; international development; natural hazards, natural resources; population and migration; and regional and rural development.

Applied Economics Teaching Resources (AETR)

Applied Economics Teaching Resources (AETR) is an online, open access, and peer-reviewed professional publication series. The aim is to provide an inclusive outlet for research, teaching and Extension education scholarship encompassing but not limited to research articles, case studies, classroom games, commentaries, experiential learning, and pedagogy.  The goal is to support and advance teaching and Extension education within the scholarly areas of agricultural and applied economics, and agribusiness economics and management. AETR seeks to publish articles that are diverse in both scope and authorship. It serves as a platform for addressing and contributing to our understanding of important societal issues, including inequality and discrimination, as well as how shifts in pedagogy (e.g., growing reliance on remote and hybrid learning modalities) may impact accessibility and inclusion.

Special Issue, “Fostering Diversity and Inclusion in Agribusiness and Agricultural Economics Classrooms and Departments”

Applied Economics and Teaching Resources
Applied Economics and Teaching Resources is calling for manuscripts on teaching methods, curriculum development, and programs to foster diversity and inclusion in agribusiness and agricultural economics classrooms and departments. Across the academy, researchers have documented the adverse effects of racial and economic inequality, gender discrimination, stereotype enforcement, and social polarization on university students in the United States. Less has been documented about these issues within agribusiness management, agricultural economics, and related undergraduate and graduate university programs. The goal of this special issue is to further our understanding of educational inequalities for students of different economic, racial, sexual, and cultural backgrounds. Further, we seek articles that report on classroom, department, college, or multi-institutional programs designed to foster and support students from diverse backgrounds.

Washington Update – November 2021

Agricultural Research Investments Scaled Back in New Build Back Better Framework
After tense negotiations, the Biden Administration and Congressional Democrats have released a revised framework for the President’s Build Back Better initiative.  In response to concerns from Senators Manchin (D-WV) and Sinema (D-AZ), the overall funding through the budget reconciliation package was reduced from $3.5 trillion to $1.85 trillion.  As a result in the reduction in funding, revisions were made to many sections of the package, including programs related to agricultural research.  The original package included over $7 billion for agricultural research.  The new framework now proposes $2 billion in agricultural research investments.
