[Risk and] Supply Chain Resilience: Lessons from the Pandemic

In the 2022 AAEA Annual Meeting session “[Risk and] Supply Chain Resilience: Lessons from the Pandemic” authors discuss the agricultural sector has been reasonably resilient in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the question remains of whether the supply disruptions that did occur where greater than socially optimal. One can argue that producers at the firm level have less concern with  taking actions to reduce the supply chain’s vulnerability to shocks than is optimal at the society level. However, while increasing  the resilience of agricultural supply chains could reduce the potential for large swings in prices, it could also decrease production efficiency and raise mean prices. This session will start with a discussion of the conceptual framework then move to issues in transport, trade, developing countries, and the role of federal policy.
