Cutting U.S. Food Waste in Half
Three researchers present opportunities at 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting
The United Kingdom became a leader in reducing food waste when it achieved a 21% reduction in household food waste from 2007 to 2012. However, progress towards a 50% reduction seems to have hit a plateau according to their recent reports.
As countries align national targets with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal to halve per capita food waste at the retail and consumer levels, addressing consumer food waste is regarded as one of the key channels to achieve these goals in developed countries.
In the Invited Paper Session “Food Waste Economics: Opportunities and Innovations,” three presentations will identify opportunities and innovations in food waste research.
Danyi Qi, a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University transitioning to an Assistant Professor at Louisiana State University says “food waste policies could change more than just food waste behaviors. To maximize social welfare, we should prioritize our food waste polices based on these market and behavioral responses.”
Brenna Ellison from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign hopes “participants will walk away with a better understanding of the current gaps in the food waste literature, particularly from an economist’s perspective.”
Over 1,600 participants are expected to attend the 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting, which will take place on August 5- August 7 at the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, D.C. This session is on Monday, August 6, from 10:00 am – 11:30 am.
