How are Policy Changes Guiding the Future of Applied Economics?
Politico reporter and four AAEA members speak at 2019 AAEA Annual Meeting
Policymakers require objective information to design evidence-based policies. There is worldwide concern over the lack of appreciation for objective scientific facts and analysis. In turn, this has led to portions of our citizenry losing trust in our government and research institutions and concern about threats to our democracy. What do these developments imply for Applied Economics analysis and the concomitant development of statistical evidence? While there are implications at the individual economist level, it is an especially critical time for institutions to consider their role in promoting fact-based information, and for the discipline, at large, to consider the issues.
In the track session “The Future of Institutional Organization and Support of Applied Economics,” sponsored by AAEAs Senior Section and the National Association of Agricultural Economics Administrators, four presentations will explore how the major institutions whose missions align with agriculture, food, rural development, and environmental issues can address the challenges of the future.
