Renew Your AAEA Membership for 2018

You can renew your AAEA membership for 2018 on the AAEA website. Simply log in to the “My Account” section to renew. Completing your renewal online saves you time by filling out most of the information for you automatically.

The benefits of your AAEA membership only last through the spring of 2018, so be sure to renew soon to ensure that you keep receiving services from AAEA throughout the upcoming year.

You will need to be a current AAEA member in order to vote in the Executive Board Election, which runs April 15-May 15.

Travel Grants for Early Career Professionals and Graduate Students

The AAEA Trust seeks applications for Early Career Professional and Graduate Student Travel Grants. These grants defray housing and transportation costs associated with attending the 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. on August 5-7. The amount of the travel grant awarded will depend on the number of applications received.

The AAEA Trust seeks applications for AAEA Annual Meeting International Travel Grants. These grants defray housing and transportation costs associated with attending the 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. on August 5-7. The amount of the travel grant awarded will depend on the number of applications received. The funds for these travel grants are provided by a grant from USDA-ERS.

2018 AAEA Annual Meeting Post-conference Workshop:
Science Communications and Media Engagement

August 8, 2018 at the Marriott Wardman Park
8:30 am – 12:30 pm
Cost: $25

Workshop Description: AAEA has engaged the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Center for Public Engagement with Science and Technology to conduct a communications workshop for our members. This four hour workshop will be divided into two parts. The first part, termed Science Communication Fundamentals, focuses on the core components of successful public engagement. Participants are introduced to the AAAS public engagement framework, a guide they can apply to all kinds of interactions. Participants also learn how to identify a public engagement goal, determine the relevant audience, craft tailored messages to achieve their goal and rehearse their engagement scenario. This workshop includes both facilitator presentations and attendee exercises.

2018 Notification Letters

Thank you to everyone that submitted a Selected Presentation abstract for the 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. We received about 1,300 abstracts and accepted 804. Notification letters regarding all Selected Presentation submissions were sent on March 15, 2018. If you have not received a notification email or are unsure of your abstract status, please email the AAEA Business office at info@aaea.org.

2018 TLC Graduate Student Teaching Award

Applications are now invited for the 2018 TLC Graduate Student Teaching Award. The Teaching, Learning and Communication Section (TLC) recognizes that graduate students are our teachers and educators of tomorrow. In support of this emerging cohort, we have chosen to sponsor an award to recognize and encourage graduate students who excel in teaching agricultural or applied economics courses. The award winner will be recognized at the 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. during the TLC section’s business meeting. The award recipient is expected to present at the TLC’s track session “Teaching Tips from AAEA Winners.”

2018 AAEA Employment Center and Job Fair

Registration is now open for the 2018 Employment Center taking place August 5-7, during the 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. New this year, AAEA will be hosting a job fair on Sunday, August 5, 2018. This one-day event will take place in the Employment Center from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. This is a great opportunity for employers to connect with potential candidates.

2018 AAEA Annual Meeting:
Extension Competition for Graduate Students

The Extension and Graduate Student Sections of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association announce a competition for graduate students for 2018. This competition, sponsored jointly by the Extension Section and the Graduate Student Section, provides graduate student competitors the opportunity to develop extension and outreach programs from their research. The development of education materials and presentations suitable for a general public audience is expected.

NBER Call for Proposals:
Economics of Research and Innovation in Agriculture

The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) is planning a project, supported by the Economic Research Service, on “Research and Innovation in Agriculture.” The project will be led by NBER Research Associate Petra Moser of New York University, and will explore the role of public and private sector support for agricultural R&D, the effect of different institutional structures (such as business-university partnerships) on the conduct and impact of R&D, differences in R&D spending and outcomes across countries, differences in intellectual property rights, as well as other factors that encourage the adoption of promising new agricultural technologies and crops.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC)

Help in identifying a diverse range of qualified candidates to be considered for the Administrator’s appointment to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC). The CASAC is a chartered federal advisory committee that provides advice, information and recommendations to the EPA Administrator on the scientific and technical aspects of air quality criteria and National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). As required under the Clean Air Act section 109(d), the CASAC is composed of seven members, with at least one member of the National Academy of Sciences, one physician, and one person representing state air pollution control agencies.

Call for Papers: Recent years have witnessed a dramatic increase in the human and economic impacts of natural disasters. Between 2003 and 2013, they have resulted in total economic damages of $1.5 trillion, 1.1 million deaths, and impacted the lives of 2 billion people. Furthermore, it is worth noting that there has been a steady increase in the intensity and frequency of natural disasters, 2017 representing a case in point. Water disasters have accounted over the years for a significant proportion of natural disasters in the U.S and globally.
