The On-going Gender Pay Gaps in Academia Faculty

Research by AAEA members in AJAE

It is no secret that a female makes 80 cents to the male $1. New research finds that the differences in pay in academia sits at 11%. Based on the mean salary in 2016, the gap translates into an annual loss of just under $18,000 for female faculty, relative to their male partners.

In the article “Gender Gaps in Academia: Evidence from The Ohio State University” published in the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Joyce Chen from The Ohio State University, and Daniel Crown of the US Congressional Budget Office (formerly of The Ohio State University where he studied when he did the research) dig deeper into faculty gender wage differences.

Chen says, “Our paper examines gender wage inequality using comprehensive data from a large public university, across fields and over a ten year period. We also take a closer look at data anomalies common in academia—such as multiple appointments, non-academic appointments, and less than full-time appointments—and utilize multiple regression and statistical decomposition techniques to ascertain the primary sources of gender wage disparities.”
