Call for Applications
Inaugural Editor, Applied Economics Teaching Resources

In January 2018, the AAEA Board of Directors approved a new, online, peer-reviewed publication series, Applied Economics Teaching Resources.  This series will establish a new home for case studies, classroom games, and other teaching resources of interest to agricultural and applied economists.

Applications should be sent electronically via PDF to Kristen McGuire, Executive Director, at kmcguire@aaea.org by April 1, 2018. Interested persons may contact AAEA President Scott Swinton (swintons@msu.edu) for further background.  Nominations of promising candidates are welcome.

Renew Your AAEA Membership for 2018

You can renew your AAEA membership for 2018 on the AAEA website. Simply log in to the “My Account” section to renew. Completing your renewal online saves you time by filling out most of the information for you automatically.

The benefits of your AAEA membership only last through the spring of 2018, so be sure to renew soon to ensure that you keep receiving services from AAEA throughout the upcoming year.

You will need to be a current AAEA member in order to vote in the Executive Board Election, which runs April 15-May 15.

The AAEA Trust seeks applications for Early Career Professional and Graduate Student Travel Grants. These grants defray housing and transportation costs associated with attending the 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. on August 5-7. The amount of the travel grant awarded will depend on the number of applications received.

The AAEA Trust seeks applications for AAEA Annual Meeting International Travel Grants. These grants defray housing and transportation costs associated with attending the 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. on August 5-7. The amount of the travel grant awarded will depend on the number of applications received. The funds for these travel grants are provided by a grant from USDA-ERS.

2018 Notification Letters

Thank you to everyone that submitted a Selected Presentation abstract for the 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. We received about 1,300 abstracts and accepted 804. Notification letters regarding all Selected Presentation submissions were sent on March 15, 2018. If you have not received a notification email or are unsure of your abstract status, please email the AAEA Business office at info@aaea.org.


2018 AAEA Employment Center and Job Fair

Registration is now open for the 2018 Employment Center taking place August 5-7, during the 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. New this year, AAEA will be hosting a job fair on Sunday, August 5, 2018. This one-day event will take place in the Employment Center from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. This is a great opportunity for employers to connect with potential candidates.

2018 Extension Competition for Graduate Students
The Extension and Graduate Student Sections of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association

The Extension and Graduate Student Sections of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association announce a competition for graduate students for 2018. This competition, sponsored jointly by the Extension Section and the Graduate Student Section, provides graduate student competitors the opportunity to develop extension and outreach programs from their research. The development of education materials and presentations suitable for a general public audience is expected.

Obiturary

Dana G. Dalrymple,
1932- 2018

Dana G. Dalrymple, a 36-year veteran of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), worked to improve farming practices worldwide. Most of his career was spent working for CGIAR, formerly the Consultative Group for International Agriculture Research, which he supported soon after its inception in 1972.  As an agricultural economist, he shaped the policies, programs and budgets of the agency’s Washington headquarters and 16 international centers in South America, Africa and Asia, and he traveled to most of them.Dalrymple, 85, died of complications from pneumonia on March 7 at his home in Washington, D.C. after suffering from dementia. Colleagues, friends and family will celebrate his life at a later date to be announced.

2018 Heading North Award - Deadline is Today!

Applications are now invited for the 2018 Heading North award. The Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES) and the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA) through the AAEA Trust will jointly offer this travel award to members of AARES or AAEA normally resident in Australia or New Zealand.

The objective of the award is to provide the winner with an opportunity for professional and personal development and international professional and cultural exchange. The award will have a value of US $3,000.00 USD to be used to assist the winner to participate in the 2018 Annual Meeting of AAEA to be held in Washington, D.C., August 5-7, 2018.  Applicants for the award must be a member of either AARES or AAEA.

Call for Nominations
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC)

Help in identifying a diverse range of qualified candidates to be considered for the Administrator’s appointment to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC). The CASAC is a chartered federal advisory committee that provides advice, information and recommendations to the EPA Administrator on the scientific and technical aspects of air quality criteria and National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). As required under the Clean Air Act section 109(d), the CASAC is composed of seven members, with at least one member of the National Academy of Sciences, one physician, and one person representing state air pollution control agencies.

Call for Papers: Recent years have witnessed a dramatic increase in the human and economic impacts of natural disasters. Between 2003 and 2013, they have resulted in total economic damages of $1.5 trillion, 1.1 million deaths, and impacted the lives of 2 billion people. Furthermore, it is worth noting that there has been a steady increase in the intensity and frequency of natural disasters, 2017 representing a case in point. Water disasters have accounted over the years for a significant proportion of natural disasters in the U.S and globally.
