AAEA Fellows
Call for Nominations

The AAEA Fellows Selection Committee is inviting nominations for the 2018 AAEA Fellows Awards. The deadline for submission of nominations and supporting biographical documentation is Wednesday, October 4, 2017. Selection is based mainly on a continuous contribution to the advancement of agricultural or applied economics as defined by the Vision Statement of the AAEA. Achievements may be in research, teaching, extension, administration, or business. The nominee must be a living current member of AAEA and have been a member for at least five years.

AAEA Trust:
Call for Proposals

The AAEA Trust Committee and Executive Board are seeking proposals for programs or projects that:

  • Support development of graduate students and early career professionals
    AND/OR
  • Deepen participation in AAEA or reach out to new groups
    AND/OR
  • Enhance the AAEA Annual Meeting

Funds donated to the unrestricted and student and early career professional development categories of the AAEA Trust will be used to fund proposals approved by the AAEA Trust Committee and Executive Board. Proposals from AAEA Committees and Sections are encouraged. Please note the Trust does not fund individual research projects, nor does it retroactively fund activities that have already taken place. Please contact Trust Committee Chair Jayson Lusk at jlusk@purdue.edu if you would like to discuss your proposal ideas before submission.

Anthony Grano Scholarship Award:
Call for Applications

The AAEA Trust is now accepting applications for the Anthony Grano Scholarship Award. Two scholarships of $1,250 will be awarded to academically successful, highly motivated students in agricultural economics or a closely related discipline with an interest in agricultural policy and the policy formation process. The scholarship will support recipients to travel to Washington, D.C. to meet with senior staff from USDA, Congressional offices, and agricultural trade associations and commodity organizations.

Eligible applicants will be graduate students in either agricultural economics or economics with an agricultural emphasis in any U.S. university. The application deadline is Monday, October 16, 2017.

Sylvia Lane Mentor Fellowship:
Call for Applications

The Sylvia Lane Mentor Fellowship provides an opportunity for early career women scholars working on food, agricultural, or resource issues to collaborate with an established expert at another university, institution, or firm.

At least one (1) Fellowship of up to $2,500 will be awarded for use during the 2018 calendar year. The funding is designed to cover the costs of travel and expenses for the awardee to work directly with the mentor on a specific project. Preference will be given to new mentoring relationships as opposed to continuing an existing one. The application deadline is Monday, October 16, 2017.

Uma Lele Mentor Fellowship Award:
Call For Applications

The Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) Trust is now accepting applications for the Uma Lele Mentor Fellowship Award.  The Uma Lele Mentor Fellowship Award supports a mentorship relationship with a view to promote high quality research of a policy/problem solving nature in countries with food insecurity and environmental pressures. It is meant to promote collaboration between an early career scholar who is a citizen of and resides in a developing country and a distinguished mentor.

McCorkle Scholarship:
Call for Applications

The AAEA Trust Committee is accepting applications for the 2018 Chester O. McCorkle Jr. Student Scholarship. This scholarship will support applied research by a graduate student on economic issues relating to agriculture. At least one (1) scholarship of up to $2,000 will be awarded. Funds can be used for research related expenses, data collection, tuition and program related expenses such as fees, books, supplies and equipment, provided the items are required of all students in the program.

Applications are due Monday, October 16, 2017.

AAEA President-Elect and Directors

The AAEA Nominating Committee is soliciting nominations from AAEA membership for AAEA President-Elect and two AAEA Directors, all for three year terms beginning July 2018.

Please submit the names and affiliations of nominees to kmcguire@aaea.org. Nominations must be received by October 5, 2017.


2018 AAEA Annual Meeting:
Save the Date

The 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., will take place on August 5-7, 2018 at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park.

The Call for Abstract Submissions for the 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. will be due in January, 2018. Keep an eye out for future Exchange issues with more information.

AAAS Leadership Fellows in Public Engagement
Food and Water Security Focus in 2018 RFP

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has announced its call for 2018-19 Fellows in the Leshner Leadership Institute for Public Engagement with Science.  “Each year, a cohort of 15 AAAS Leshner Fellows from an area of research at the nexus of science and society will convene for a week of intensive public engagement and science communication training and public engagement plan development… Food and Water Security is the topic for the 2018-2019 cohort of AAAS Leshner Fellows.”  The interdisciplinary program invites applicants from a various fields, including economics.  Deadline for Fellow applications is November 1, 2017.


IMMANA Fellowships
Call for Applications

The Friedman School of Nutrition at Tufts University and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine are pleased to announce the fourth and last round of Post-doctoral Fellowships for emerging leaders in agriculture, nutrition, and health research, funded with UK aid from the UK government through the Department for International Development (DFID) through their program on Innovative Methods and Metrics for Agriculture and Nutrition Actions (IMMANA). For 2018-19, IMMANA will award five 12-month Post-doctoral Fellowships to early career researchers who are using and developing or adapting these new methodological approaches with Mentors in ongoing research programs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Complimentary Issue

Complimentary access to the special issue " Attitudes towards and Impact of GM Technology: Policy and Implications for China"

China Agricultural Economic Review is pleased to announce the publication of a significant special issue on genetically modified (GM) technology, its policy and implications for China. The selected manuscripts were carefully reviewed by a group of experts from China, Canada and other countries. It is led by distinguished field expert, Dr. Jikun Huang, the Founder and Director of the Center for Chinese Agricultural Policy (CCAP) and a Professor of Agricultural Economics in the School of Advanced Agriculture, Peking University in China.

The 62nd Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES) Annual Conference 2018

Join us in 2018 for an exciting program of discussion and social events. The annual AARES conference attracts 250 to 300 delegates from around the world in the fields of agricultural, environmental, food, resource and development economics and agribusiness.

The conference offers pre-conference workshops, keynote addresses by distinguished speakers, mini-symposia, selected and contributed paper sessions and a vibrant social program. Thanks to generous funding from Mr. Bob Barker, UCLA Law School is pleased to offer the Animal Law and Policy Small Grants Program (“UCLA ALP Program”). http://law.ucla.edu/centers/social-policy/animal-law-grants-program The UCLA ALP Program exists to encourage new academic empirical research, with the goal of developing better empirical bases from which to understand, evaluate, and pursue animal law reform. Applicants from a variety of academic disciplinary backgrounds, including economics, sociology, demography, social psychology, moral psychology, medicine, plant-based nutritional science, cognitive science, law, public health, and public policy are encouraged to apply.
