10:30 am - 11:50 am
Zoom
Meeting ID: 862 9431 8917
Passcode: 207263

Session Description: This session delves into the economic and natural resource use dimensions of agri-food value chains. The studies address critical questions, including how to prioritize investments for agri-food system transformation, the structural dynamics of North America's supply chains and their regional interdependencies, and the trade-offs in U.S. food systems across energy, water, and labor resources. Additionally, the session provides a global perspective by quantifying the economic contributions of agri-food systems and highlighting the importance of value-added activities. Collectively, these insights contribute to a better understanding of the economic and resource allocation dynamics within food systems.

Exploring the Future of Florida Citrus: Assessing the Viability of OTC as a Solution

Session Description: This session explores the potential of oxytetracycline (OTC) trunk injections as a lifeline for Florida's citrus industry, which is devastated by Huanglongbing (HLB). Following EPA's recent SLN approval, growers have quickly adopted this treatment. The presentations assess grower support, adoption trends, and the profitability of OTC trunk injections, along with the risks and benefits of an automated OTC delivery system. The session also evaluates growers' willingness to adopt cost-support programs for OTC treatments, exploring the scalability of these technologies to rejuvenate the industry. Additionally, it addresses shifting labor dynamics, including how workforce shortages and market demands are affecting citrus production.

Implications of climate change in smallholder agricultural systems: Adaptation, mitigation, and impacts on rural livelihoods

August 22, 2025
9:00 am - 10:30 am
Zoom
Meeting ID: 891 2054 0584
Passcode: 898949

Session Description: A large body of literature shows that smallholder farmers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are most vulnerable to and affected by climate change, even though their contribution to climate change is marginal. The interconnectedness between agriculture, climate change, and rural well-being underscores the need for production practices that enhance smallholder farmers' adaptive capacity against climate change. This session comprises three papers: one each from South Asia, Africa south of the Sahara, and Latin America. They collectively provide critical evidence on the implications of climate change in smallholder farming systems in LMICs. Paper 1 discusses the impacts of rainfall shocks on child education in Tanzania and unpacks the mechanisms behind said impacts. Paper 2 explores the impacts of bundles of training and financial support interventions on the adoption of climate adaptation practices among smallholder farmers in Nepal. Paper 3 presents the case of palm farmers in the Amazon to highlight the impacts of field days and digital information on climate mitigation.

Improving Sustainable Agriculture and Ecosystem Management in Developing Countries

July 11, 2025
10:30 am -11:50 am
Zoom
Meeting ID: 818 8649 7013
Passcode: 626527

Session Description: Sustainable agricultural practices and efficient ecosystem management build resilience against climate change. Understanding how different policies, behavioral interventions and technologies affect sustainable agriculture and ecosystem management is crucial for evidence-based policymaking. The four studies in this session provide novel empirical evidence on what policies, nudges and extension services can improve sustainable agriculture and ecosystem management.

9:00 am - 10:20 am
Zoom
Meeting ID: 818 8649 7013
Passcode: 626527

Session Description: Smallholder farmers throughout the globe often fail to adopt improved varieties, despite the productivity benefits from doing so. In this session, we explore different strategies to promote adoption of improved varieties, and factors that may determine the effectiveness of such strategies, across various regions. This will include results from a systematic review of interventions to increase improved variety adoption in the Global South, and case studies that explore the importance of peer networks, quality certification, and having varieties that match producer's needs for improved seed adoption in India, Kenya, and Costa Rica respectively.
