The cost to attend a Luncheon is not included in the Annual Meeting Registration cost. Pre-registration for Luncheons are required before the annual meeting. You may register for Luncheons while registering for the annual meeting or by calling the AAEA Business Office at (414) 918-3190.

Extension is recognized for its ability to respond swiftly to emerging issues that impact our communities. One such issue is Avian Influenza, a topic where Extension has taken a leading role. At our upcoming luncheon, we are honored to welcome Dr. Beth Thompson, State Veterinarian with the South Dakota Animal Industry Board. Dr. Thompson will provide an overview of the current Avian Influenza outbreak and initiate a discussion on the economic implications of Avian Influenza and the role Extension Economists play in helping communities navigate ramifications of this disease.
Speaker: Dr. Beth Thompson, JD, DVM
Bio:
Dr. Thompson joined the South Dakota Animal Industry Board in May 2022, and serves as the SD State Veterinarian and Executive Secretary for the Animal Industry Board. Her duties also include serving as the director of the SD Veterinary Licensing Board.
Dr. Thompson earned her DVM from the University of MN College of Veterinary Medicine, and also earned a certificate in Swine Medicine. After veterinary school, she worked for a MN based swine system. She joined the MN Board of Animal Health in 2008 as a senior veterinarian and served as the MN State Veterinarian from 2016 – 2022.
In addition to her duties at the Animal Industry Board and as the executive secretary for the SD Veterinary Licensing Board, Dr. Thompson is part of the executive committee for the United States Animal Health Association (USAHA), is the president of the National Association of State Animal Health Officials and is involved in a number of other animal and livestock health organizations.
In addition to her veterinary degree, Dr. Thompson has a Juris Doctorate in 1992 from William Mitchell College of Law. She is originally from Groton, SD.
