US Rice Farmers’ Perspectives and Opinions Toward Organic Farming
Joohun Han, Alvaro Durand-Morat, and Eva Stephani Caroline
We survey US rice farmers’ (conventional and organic) opinions and perceptions of organic practices. Our findings reveal that conventional farmers may lack both knowledge and interest in organic farming. While profitability drives decisions for both groups, differing views on risk and environmental values indicate an information gap among conventional producers.

Exciting Updates from the Student Section of the AAEA!
We’re thrilled to share some big news — the SS-AAEA Journal has been renamed the Undergraduate Journal in Agricultural and Applied Economics! This new name reflects our continued commitment to showcasing outstanding undergraduate research in agricultural and applied economics.
To strengthen the journal and support our authors, we’ve also established a dedicated editorial board focused on enhancing the review process and overall quality of publications.
We invite you and your students to submit their research papers for consideration in upcoming issues of the journal. This is a great opportunity for undergraduate scholars to share their work with the broader academic community and gain valuable publishing experience.

This year’s workshop features a new and expanded program. In addition to a strong focus on survey-based data construction, experimental auctions, and discrete choice experiments, the curriculum has been extended to include in-depth coverage of survey design and data collection, basket-based choice experiments, and field experiments, with applications across a wide range of policy contexts. Participants will gain both theoretical and practical knowledge, be introduced to state-of-the-art software tools, and design their own experimental applications through hands-on training.
The instructor team includes:
- Vincenzina Caputo (Michigan State University)
- Carola Grebitus (Arizona State University)
- David Just (Cornell University)
- Jayson L. Lusk (Purdue University)
- Rodolfo M. Nayga (Texas A&M University)

Opportunities and Barriers for Rural Development in America’s New Energy Landscape
June 9 – 10, 2026
Molly Pitcher Inn
Red Bank, New Jersey
ABSTRACT Deadline: February 13, 2026
The rapid deployment of new energy infrastructure including biomass, solar, wind, and carbon capture technologies, as well as new demand sources like data centers is changing the landscape of America's rural communities. While these energy projects may be welcome due to the economic opportunities that they bring, many projects encounter opposition due to their (real or perceived) negative impacts. The goal of the 2026 NAREA Workshop is to gain a deeper understanding of how new energy development is impacting rural life in America, including impacts on economic development, employment opportunities, farm incomes, environmental amenities, and health outcomes.
