PC16: Structural Transformation, Trade Integration, and Sustainability in East and Southeast Asian Agriculture: New Evidence, Methods, and Policy Implications

Location: Kansas City Marriott Downtown
Fee: $15
Date/Time:     Saturday, July 25        9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Brief Description of Topic:
This workshop examines how East and Southeast Asian agriculture is being reshaped by three simultaneous forces: rapid structural and rural transformation, deeper trade integration and reconfiguration of regional value chains, and rising sustainability constraints from climate and resource pressures.

Relevance to AAEA Members/Meeting Attendees:
The proposed workshop will be of interest to agricultural and applied economists working on development, trade, industrial organization, and agricultural policy. It aligns with AAEA sections and communities focused on International Development, Agricultural Trade and Policy, Food and Agricultural Marketing, Industrial Organization, and Applied Econometrics. The sessions connect micro-level behavior (households and farms) with meso- and macro-level outcomes (regional trade patterns and market power), offering a coherent set of insights relevant to researchers, practitioners, and graduate students. Participants will gain (i) empirical takeaways from China, Japan, and ASEAN-related trade settings, (ii) transferable methodological tools, and (iii) a clearer understanding of policy trade-offs affecting rural welfare, competitiveness, and market performance

Intended Audience
The workshop is also intended for graduate students and early-career researchers seeking to develop comparative and interdisciplinary research networks in Asian agriculture. In addition, it will be of interest to U.S.-based researchers concerned with comparative perspectives on development, trade, and sustainability beyond the Asia context.
