2007AAEA Annual Meetings ? Portland, OR ? July 29 -August 1  

The Graduate Student Section Meeting at the2007 Joint Annual Meeting of AAEA, WAEA and CAES in Portland, Oregon was a success!

Four main activities & events are offered at the 2007 meeting:

 

 
 

Young Professional Teaching Academy

Sunday, July 29, 11:30 - 4:00 PM , Oregon Convention Center, B116

Co-sponsored by the Teaching, Learning, and Communication Section and the Graduate Student Section

The 2007 Young Professionals Teaching Academy acquainted 27 registrants with a wide range of valuable teaching techniques and resources. . Molly Espey (Clemson University) talked about how to integrate learning activities into a large (100 students) classroom while Mary Marchant (Virginia Tech University) spoke about how to manage a large classroom. Andy Barkley ( Kansas State University ) provided an inspirational presentation about teaching and how to make teaching and learning fun. Plans are underway for next year's Teaching Academy in Orlando (Sunday afternoon again) and if anyone has ideas for possible topics please contact Paul Wilson or Mike Boland

 
 

 

 
 

Graduate Student Business Meeting and Reception

Sunday, July 29, 4:30-6:30 PM , Oregon Convention Center, A106 & A107

Co-sponsored by the Graduate Student Section and the Committee on Women in Agricultural Economics (CWAE)

Started with an introduction of the outgoing and incoming officers and advisors and included a presentation by the Council on Food, Agricultural, and Resource Economics ( C-FARE), by Dr. Stephen Jackson of Mississippi St and Tamara Wagester . The reception following the meeting was co-hosted with the Committee on Women in Agricultural Economics (CWAE) and provided a great opportunity for students to meet their peers from various schools and network with professionals.

 
     
 

Graduate Student Extension Competition

Graduate Student Competition sponsored by the Extension and Graduate Student Sections of AAEA culminated in the selection of 3 winners during the Portland AAEA annual Conference July 2007. Prize money of $850 was divided among the following:

  • First Place : Nicole Olynk, Michigan State University
  • Second Place : Lindsey Ellingson, Colorado State University
  • Third Place : Joleen Hadrick , Michigan State University

The three were among 7 finalists who all delivered excellent presentations, according to Larry Sanders, chair of the competition and a Professor at Oklahoma State University . The other finalists who competed were: Ana Rios, Purdue University; Jennifer Thorvaldson, Colorado State University; Margarita Velandia, Texas Tech University; Mallory Vestal , Oklahoma State University

Justin Van Wart, University of Nebraska , was among the 8 finalists selected but was unable to attend the competition in Portland .

As the competition moves into its second year, all grad students and their advisors are urged to consider competing in 2008. Details will be available within the next few months.

 
     
 

Graduate Student Case Study Competition

Co-sponsored by the Graduate Student Section and the Agribusiness Economics and Management Section

Finals: Monday, July 30, 5:00 - 6:30m PM, F151 - F152

The Case Study Competition analyzed Stahlbush Island Farms, a family-oriented, sustainable fruit and vegetable produceder. GSS Track Sessions
For the past several years the GSS has offered a series of Track Sessions to help prepare graduate students for interviews and equip them with the knowledge to be successful journal article writers.  This year the GSS has launched a track session that focuses on how to respond to job posting.
