The Crop Insurance and the Farm Bill: A New Paradigm in U.S. Agricultural Policy Symposium will take place on October 8-9, 2013 in Louisville, Kentucky.
AAEA seeks submissions for Selected Presentations for the 2013 AAEA-sponsored Symposium “Crop Insurance and the Farm Bill: A New Paradigm in U.S. Agricultural Policy.” Submissions for Selected Presentations need to include a two-page, single-spaced abstract that provides a clear explanation of what will be presented at the Symposium. Authors should include in this abstract a discussion of the relevance of the topic, research methodology, and potential for generating discussion during the meeting. Please do not include your name or contact information in the abstract file.
Abstracts need to be received by April 19, 2013, and should be submitted using AAEA’s online submission system. Material previously presented at other meetings cannot be accepted, and the submitting author will be asked to verify that the material has not been presented elsewhere.
Symposium Overview
Since the inception of the U.S. agricultural policies in the early 1930s, the Farm Bills enacted have centered on various iterations of supply controls, price supports and/or direct transfers. In the current political climate a paradigm shift seems to be underway toward alternative risk management strategies, primarily subsidized crop insurance offerings, to help mitigate the substantial risks inherent in agricultural production and marketing. In this symposium, the effects and impacts of the proposed shift to crop insurance as the primary tool for risk management in agriculture will be examined and assessed. Potential topic areas to be explored include the interaction between crop insurance and traditional Title 1 farm support programs; rating and delivery challenges related to more widespread reliance on insurance; innovations in the tools and techniques for crop insurance analysis; and the intersection between crop insurance and farm management decisions.
Review Process
All submissions will be subjected to a common, double-blind review process. After the review process has been completed, topic leaders will construct coherent selected paper sessions from the set of accepted presentations. Notification of whether a presentation proposal has been accepted will be sent by June 7 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Selected Papers are allotted 30 minutes at the meeting for presentation. Five to six papers are included in each Selected Paper session. Authors of accepted Selected Papers need to submit a full version of their paper to AgEcon Search no later than September 13, 2013. Papers that miss this deadline will need to be withdrawn from the program. The full version of the paper has no length limitations, but less than 25 pages is preferred. Double-spaced, 8.5 by 11-inch, single-sided format is requested. Please follow the American Journal of Agricultural Economics style guidelines, with the exception of the single table/figure per page convention.
