Karen Brooks is manager of the World Bank's agricultural programs for the Africa Region. She has been with the World Bank for twenty years, working for the first ten years on agricultural issues in Eastern Europe and countries of the former Soviet Union, and subsequently in Africa. Prior to joining the World Bank, she was Associate Professor of Applied Economics at The University of Minnesota. Her published work relates to agriculture in centrally planned and transition economies, including productivity, land issues, and the process of reform. She holds a PhD in economics from the University of Chicago, where she studied under D. Gale Johnson as a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow. Her undergraduate degree is in Political Science from Stanford University, with an emphasis on Chinese politics and language.
