Alan D. Barkema is senior vice president and director of research at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. In this role, he leads the bank’s research activities in macroeconomics and monetary policy, the payments system, banking studies, and regional economics.
Since joining the bank as a research economist in 1986, Barkema has written and spoken widely on developments in the U.S. economy, with a particular focus on regional and agricultural economics. In addition to his research activities, he has also served in a number of leadership positions, including a three-year term as professor and head of the Agricultural Economics Department at Oklahoma State University. Barkema returned to the bank in 1999 to help launch its Center for the Study of Rural America. He later expanded the regional research and analysis activities of the former Center, leading the bank’s then new Regional, Public, and Community Affairs Division and establishing research expertise in the bank’s Denver, Oklahoma City, and Omaha offices. Barkema assumed his current responsibilities in October 2009.
A native of Alexander, Iowa, Barkema holds BS, MS, and PhD degrees from Iowa State University and an MS degree from Cornell University. He resides in Lenexa, Kansas, with his wife and two children.
