John List is Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago. He received his BS in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1992, and his PhD from the University of Wyoming in 1996. List had his first teaching position at the University of Central Florida, then moved to the University of Arizona and the University of Maryland, College Park, before moving to the University of Chicago. List's published research includes theoretical and empirical inquiries into both positive and normative issues in economics, with a special focus on environmental and resource problems. He is a prolific scholar who has published over 100 journal articles in top economic journals. His research has pioneered the use of controlled field experiments in economics, which have provided insights into the valuation of nonmarket goods and services, public good provisioning, behavioral anomalies, charitable giving, auction theory, and the role of the market in the development of rationality. In 2002–2003, he served as Senior Economist on the President’s Council of Economic Advisors for Environmental and Resource Economics. In 2008, he received the BE-Press Arrow Senior Prize for his field experimental work on testing economic theory. List is a NBER Research Associate, a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at Tilburg University, and a University Distinguished Scholar at Resources for the Future. He is Associate Editor of the American Economic Review and the Journal of Economic Literature, and Co-Editor of the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management. List currently resides with his wife and five children in Flossmoor, IL.
