Each year since 2002, the Extension Section has organized an agricultural education tour as a Pre-conference Workshop at the Joint Annual Meeting. This year is no exception, as the Extension Agricultural Education Tour will take place on Saturday, July 25. Participants will take a bus to several local agricultural attractions in the Milwaukee area. Possible tour stops include a dairy farm, and an energy farm, a wildlife area, the Port of Milwaukee inland waterway system, and the Fondy Food Center, Milwaukee’s largest farmer’s market. Space is limited, so register for this tour soon!

Pre-conference Workshop: USDA-Grantsmanship Workshop and NRI PD
This is a ticketed event. The cost to attend varies, based on which sections are attended.
Saturday, July 25, 7:00 am – 8:00 pm
Sunday, July 26, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

This workshop contains three separate sections, which will take place over two days, and are described below. Participants can register for Sections 1 and 2, Section 2 alone, or Sections 2 and 3. You can find descriptions of each section below. For additional information, contact Suresh Sureshwaran at ssureshwaran@csrees.usda.gov.

Saturday, July 25, 7:30 am – 12:30 pm
As part of the NRI Agribusiness Markets and Trade Project Directors’ meeting, project directors will present their project results to date during oral and poster presentations. The meeting consists of three moderated panels focused on marketing and placement of agribusiness products; market structure, performance and behavior; and consumer preferences and agribusiness decisions. All participants will be invited to attend the NRI Poster and Networking reception described in the third section below. Dr. S. Sureshwaran, National Program Leader, and Ms. Katrena R. Hanks, Program Specialist will facilitate this meeting.

Section 2: Opportunities for Funded Research at CSREES
Saturday, July 25, 1:00 pm – 5:30 pm
The focus of this section is to help build capacity to be successful in competitively funded grants from USDA-CSREES. Social scientists have unique opportunities to lead and participate in multidisciplinary applications because of the increasing importance given to impacts and solving societal problems in CSREES competitive grants. The session will consist of brief presentations by CSREES staff on the opportunities available at CSREES, especially for agricultural economists; the application review process; and the development of logic models. The session will also include a moderated panel presentation on integrating economics into multidisciplinary proposals. Following the pre-conference, all participants will be invited to attend the NRI Poster and Networking reception described in the third section below.

Section 3: NRI Agricultural Prosperity for Small and Medium-sized Farms Program Project Director’s Meeting
Saturday, July 25 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm; Sunday, July 26, 7:30 am – 5:00 pm
Over 40 NRI Agricultural Prosperity for Small and Medium-Sized Farms program grantees will participate in this section, which consists of four panels and a poster and networking session. The session will begin with the NRI Poster and Networking reception on Saturday, July 25, 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm. Approximately 40 posters are expected with sufficient time to network and learn from the experiences of past grantees.

On Sunday, the session will begin with three panel presentations on the following long term goals for the grants program: i) farm land preservation and transition; ii) on-farm production and conservation practices; and iii) increasing the farmer’s share of the food dollar. The final panel presentation is on lessons learned from the grants programs on integrating innovative teaching and outreach into research projects. Dr. S. Sureshwaran, National Program Leader, and Ms. Katrena R. Hanks, Program Specialist will facilitate this meeting.

Pre-conference Workshop: Applied Computational Economics
This is a ticketed event. The cost to attend is $60.
Saturday, July 25, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

This workshop will provide an overview of the rapidly developing field of computational economics. It will focus on practical applications of numerical methods to the formulation, solution, and analysis of stochastic dynamic models in economics and finance, with emphasis on nonlinear dynamic optimization models.

The workshop will be based on the award-winning graduate course currently taught by Professor Mario J. Miranda at The Ohio State University and will cover material presented in his textbook with Paul W. Fackler, "Applied Computational Economics and Finance", MIT Press, 2002. Miranda will be leading the workshop with Dmitry Vedenov of Texas A&M University.

The workshop designed to interest established and emerging applied economists who wish to learn how to use numerical techniques to solve and analyze economic models that do not possess closed-form algebraic solution or that otherwise cannot be readily solved using conventional mathematical analytic techniques. Potential areas of application include, but are not limited to, agricultural, environmental, development, financial, industrial, and macro- economics.

Participants will need to supply their own laptop computers on which MATLAB Release R2008a has been installed. Participants who have do not have access to a working copy of MATLAB will be supplied with a short-lived license, courtesy of Mathworks, developers of MATLAB.

The organizers of this workshop would like to gratefully acknowledge funding from the Andersons Endowment, The Ohio State University.

Pre-conference Workshop: 2009 Professionals Teaching Academy
This is a ticketed event. The cost to attend for students is $15 and for professionals is $45.
Saturday, July 25, 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Whether you are a new assistant professor just starting your teaching career, a 25-year veteran of teaching applied economics, or a student hoping to one day teach economics, the 2009 Professionals Teaching Academy has something just for you. As a Teaching Academy participant, you will practice while you learn new teaching tips and active-learning techniques for your classroom. Nationally-recognized active-learning expert Margaret Hable has trained AAEA teaching award recipient Dixie Watts Reaves to present an interactive workshop on integrating active-learning into the agricultural and applied economics classroom. You will learn directly from an economist, just as past Teaching Academy participants have requested.

As an added benefit, past teaching award winners and other notable veteran teachers will be seated with “interest area” small groups to lead activities throughout the presentation. You will discuss activities that work in different disciplinary areas (e.g., econometrics) and with different course sizes or structures (e.g., large lecture courses or senior-level capstone). Everyone will leave this workshop with economics-specific methods ready to implement in your classroom.

This event is co-sponsored by the Graduate Student Section and Teaching, Learning, and Communication Section.
